Excalibur Sportsbook Review

Excalibur Sportsbook Review

The Excalibur Las Vegas may be shaped in the form of a castle, but it feels more like you have been banished to the dungeon when visiting this place, including the Excalibur sportsbook.

The dark and musty resort uses the Medieval theme at every turn on this property. However, with the NHL’s Golden Knights already here and the NFL’s Raiders about to call America’s Playground home, maybe it’s time for a complete makeover at one of the oldest operations in Vegas betting.

You are guaranteed some of the cheapest rates in Las Vegas at this hotel, which opened in 1990. But, unless you like wizards and mythical figures, this will likely be your first and last stay here.

Excalibur Sportsbook 101

The Excalibur property is one of MGM’s lower-tier properties on the Strip. Some would say it’s the very bottom. It’s hardly one of the best bookies in the company’s group of operations, never mind in Las Vegas.

The Excalibur Las Vegas sportsbook is located at 3850 South Las Vegas Boulevard. It’s situated at the very back of the main casino floor near the tiny poker room and a cafe.

The Luxor sportsbook hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day of the week. Players must be 21 years of age or older to wager anywhere in Nevada, including on Excalibur entertainment esports or any other gaming option in Las Vegas.

If you’re used to the cheap seats at a sporting event, you will find a lot of them at the Excalibur sportsbook. The smoke and noise from the casino floor finds its way into the Excalibur sports betting area, which can be quite annoying at times.

There are several rows of leather chairs, followed by another section of tables and chairs. At the back of the seating area where smoking is allowed are high tables and chairs, which is great for a group setting.

There are plenty of TVs in this room for horse players and sports bettors, all of them with adequate picture quality. The large betting board with Excalibur sportsbook odds is easy to spot anywhere in the venue.

Complimentary drink vouchers aren’t a bargain here, but they’re cheaper than most places on the Strip today. You must bet $100 on sports and $10 on horses to get a free beverage.

Excalibur sports lines are offered on all the major sports, along with horse and dog racing, which is the same as other venues on the Strip like the Flamingo or Harrah’s. The wait in line is short with little traffic in this room. They have eight betting windows available, but only one or two are open during the week.

There are two options for Excalibur online sports betting.

One is to register at any of the eight MGM properties on the Strip and download the playMGM sports betting app to your Android or iOS device. But this platform, which is an IGT PlaySpot mobile solution, is only available in the state of Nevada.

The best option is to join the top-ranked online site Bovada. Membership is free, and so is the welcome bonus. Plus, you never have to worry where you are in the country to make a bet on this trusted platform.

Place Your Bets at the Excalibur

The Excalibur sportsbook is a decent size and includes a keno lounge. If those aren’t the numbers you are looking for, bettors will discover many betting options on sporting events and pari-mutuel wagering in this venue located near the south end of the Strip.

Here are some of the sports with posted Excalibur Las Vegas sportsbook odds:

  • Pro and college football
  • Pro and college basketball
  • Major League Baseball, including playoffs and World Series
  • Mixed Martial Arts and UFC events
  • Major soccer leagues from around the world
  • Boxing, but mostly just major bouts
  • Hockey, including the playoffs and Stanley Cup
  • Auto racing, with weekly race odds and Sprint Cup Championship futures
  • Golf, with weekly odds and futures on all four majors
  • Tennis, with odds on all four Grand Slam events

Here are some of the bets available at the land-based Excalibur sportsbook:

  • Money line
  • Point spread
  • Over/under totals
  • Future betting
  • Some proposition bets, especially for the Super Bowl
  • Seven varieties of parlay and teaser cards weekly in the NFL

Excalibur sportsbook online carries even more betting options through the playMGM app, including “in-play betting” where betting lines are listed for games already in progress. The odds keep changing throughout the game to the final score.

This style of gambling is a hot ticket with mobile apps. All the major venues off the Strip — like the Westgate, Palms and Hard Rock — are getting in on the action, too.

Just Look for the Castle

The Excalibur Las Vegas is located in the middle of MGM alley on the west side of Las Vegas Boulevard. Starting from the south end of the Strip and heading north, these properties include Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur, New York New York and Park MGM.

This resort, named after the mythical sword of King Arthur, is one of the closest properties to the airport, sitting on the southwest corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue.

  • • Visitors arriving at McCarran International Airport will head west on Tropicana Avenue until they reach the Strip and Excalibur.
  • • Those traveling on Interstate 15 will exit at Tropicana Avenue to access the Excalibur.
  • • There are two trams which connect a trio of MGM properties. Both rides are free. The Mandalay Bay Tram connects that resort to the Luxor and Excalibur.
  • • Guests of the Excalibur never have to go outside to visit their neighbors to the south as a pedestrian mall connects the three MGM properties.

Excalibur Parking

MGM properties, including the Excalibur, started charging for parking in 2016. Like many amenities on the Strip, it used to be free.

  • The Excalibur parking garage is located behind the main resort off Frank Sinatra Drive.
  • There’s no charge for the first hour on your first day here. After that, it’s $8 from one to four hours, $10 over four to 24 hours, and $10 per day after that.
  • Valet parking is even higher. It’s $16 for under two hours, $18 for two to four hours, and $24 for four to 24 hours. After that, it’s $24 per day.

The Excalibur, like other MGM resorts, does offer some discounts and complimentary parking to those that have an Mlife rewards card. The rewards vary on the status of the cardholder and the amount of money gambled or spent at the resort. The same is true of its competitors at Caesars properties on the Strip — like Planet Hollywood.

Competition for Taxis

Public transportation and ride sharing programs are the best bet for visitors staying at the Excalibur. Ride share programs Uber and Lyft are taking over market share for the more expensive taxi services. Limousine services are available with the going rate around $85-90 an hour.

  • Download the ride share program apps Uber and Lyft. The cost for a ride, including self-driving cars, is about two-thirds of the taxi service.
  • Pick up your ride share on the second level of the parking garage at the airport. The cost to the Excalibur should be under $15.
  • Taxis are available everywhere in Las Vegas. At the airport, a lengthy queue forms just outside the main terminal. The cost to the Excalibur will be around $20, depending on traffic.
  • The Las Vegas public transit bus service runs 24 hours a day on the Strip, with routes to and from the airport as well. A two-hour bus pass on the Strip is $6, 24-hour pass is $8 and a three-day pass is $20.
  • The pass is good for the Deuce and Express bus lines. The Deuce is the slower of the two services, stopping at almost every resort on the Strip, including the Excalibur. The Express makes four southbound stops on the Strip, including the Excalibur.
  • Both services will take visitors all over the Las Vegas area, including the two outlet malls and Downtown Vegas.

Restaurant

Food & Drinks at the Excalibur

It’s difficult to recommend anything at this property, even though it’s the sixth largest hotel in Las Vegas. Still, there’s a big demand for food since there are so many hotel rooms and guests. The Excalibur Hotel & Casino has a steakhouse, Italian restaurant and a place where the staff insults guests (on purpose).

Here is a selection of Excalibur eateries:

  • The Steakhouse at Camelot is a little less pricey as the more upscale hotels.
  • The Italian restaurant chain Buca di Beppo has four locations in Las Vegas.
  • They are big on drinks and insults at Dick’s Last Resort. Be ready to duck at a moment’s notice.

What’s on tap at the Excalibur?

  • Located near the sports betting area, the Sports Book Bar offers additional TVs and a front-row seat with your beverage of choice.
  • The Lobby Bar, located in front of the registration desk, is a great meeting place and open 24 hours a day.
  • Play a few hands of video poker or just relax at the Sherwood Bar.
  • Complimentary drinks are only available to those willing to risk a little cash at a slot machine, table game or sportsbook.

Tram

Excalibur Rewards

The Excalibur is part of the MGM Resorts International stable of properties on the Las Vegas Strip.

The rewards card that matters the most at these venues is the Mlife card. Mlife members gain exclusive access, benefits and rewards at all of the MGM venues by earning points for every dollar spent or gambled. The program is free to join.

The starting tier, which is Sapphire (blue card), has limited benefits, but the rewards change at the next level called Pearl. These members are awarded discounts, dedicated line options at restaurants and buffets, and complimentary parking.

Members can continue the climb up the Mlife ladder into Gold, Platinum and the Noir level (black card), but that status would take some time to earn. The higher the level, the more privileges on meals, room rates, parking and complimentary gifts.

Casino

Excalibur’s Casino Experience

The 100,000-square-foot gaming area at Excalibur, which was renovated in 2015, consists of table games and more than 1,200 slot machines. Guests elevators are located at two corners of the room, away from the main entrance.

This is one of the smokiest casinos on Las Vegas Boulevard. Maybe that’s because it’s a high traffic area with $5 minimums on table games throughout the gambling venue. The minimums increase during peak hours, but this is about the lowest table minimums to be found on the Strip.

With 100 table games available to play, it’s surprising that baccarat isn’t one of them. Here are some of the gambling options:

  • Blackjack, with some paying 3-2 odds on a 21, but with $15 minimum bet.
  • Roulette, with all wheels containing two sets of zeroes.
  • Craps, start at $10 minimum with standard rules.

Other table games spotted on the casino floor include: Let it Ride, Casino War, Three Card Poker, High Card Flush, Texas Hold’em, and Crazy 4 Poker.

The high limit slots area is located at another back corner of the casino floor, near the airport/shuttle drop-off. Very few players enter this room, which consists of mostly older machines.

Complimentary drink service is decent on the main floor for guests playing the slots, video poker or table games. As always, the frequency of service will depend on the time of day and how the action is on the casino floor.

Room

Cheap Stay at the Excalibur

The Excalibur Las Vegas resort includes a renovated pool area, a 13,000-square-foot spa and fitness center, a food court and fun dungeon arcade. The hotel, which opened in June 1990, has 3,981 rooms. These are some of the cheapest room options you can find at a resort which has the worst ranking on TripAdvisor of all eight MGM properties on the Strip.

  • The Camelot-inspired resort has four towers.
  • Rooms can be found online for as low as $29 a night. What a bargain, right? Then guests will be slapped with the $40 resort fee per night at checkout. That’s certainly not a bargain anymore.
  • Rooms start at the 352-square-foot Royal Tower King. Guests can pay more for a unit with a strip view.
  • The Resort Superior King room offers a little more space at 372 square feet.
  • Resort suites start at 682 square feet up to the 1,034-square-feet Royal Two Bedroom Luxury Suite.
