NFL Futures 2019-20: Patriots Unmatched
- Category :
Let’s take a quick look at the favorites to win Super Bowl 54:
- New England Patriots +700
- Kansas City Chiefs +800
- New Orleans Saints +850
- Los Angeles Rams +900
- Cleveland Browns +1200
Six-time Champs Favored
Even with a 42-year-old quarterback, the six-time Super Bowl champion New England Patriots are still the favorites to defend their title in 2020.
But this isn’t any ordinary veteran. Tom Brady, in his 20th season in the NFL, recently signed a two-year, $50-million contract extension.
His resume is impeccable: He has played in nine Super Bowls, winning all six of New England’s championships. He has been named Super Bowl MVP four times, league MVP three times and Pro Bowl quarterback 14 times.
With No. 12 behind center, it’s no big surprise the Patriots (+700) are the top pick in NFL Future Odds to hoist the Lombardi Trophy again this winter in Super Bowl 54, which will be played outdoors on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida (Vegas Odds on Super Bowl winner provided by Bovada).
The Kansas City Chiefs (+800) and defending MVP Patrick Mahomes look to knock off the Patriots in the AFC and win their first league championship since 1970.
The New Orleans Saints (+850) are the third choice with the NFC champion Los Angeles Rams (+900) in at No. 4.
The Cleveland Browns (+1200), who just two seasons ago finished 0-16, round out the Top 5 in the Odds to Win the Super Bowl.
NFL Moves That Changed Odds Boards
The NFC West division had teams with the best and worst records in the NFL last season. The Rams (13-3) tied with the Saints for the top mark in the regular season, while the Arizona Cardinals (3-13) had the worst performance.
However, these three teams didn’t grab headlines with the biggest moves in the offseason. Here’s who did, and they certainly had an effect on NFL Futures odds boards:
- Flashy wide receiver Odell Beckham heads to the Browns.
- The Killer Bees are no more in Pittsburgh as receiver Antonio Brown goes to the Oakland Raiders.
- Running back Le’Veon Bell (another Killer Bee) returns to the field with the New York Jets.
- Patriots lose superstar tight end Rob Gronkowski to retirement and defensive end Trey Flowers to the Detroit Lions.
- Super Bowl 52 MVP quarterback Nick Foles signs with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Here are the top five favorites on the Bovada odds board for NFL MVP:
- Patrick Mahomes +550
- Andrew Luck +600
- Aaron Rodgers +1000
2019-20 NFL MVP prediction
Peyton Manning was the last player to repeat as NFL MVP in 2008 and 2009. Brett Favre also matched that feat in 1995 and 1996. So, the odds aren’t really in the favor of Mahomes, who leads a high-octane offense which got even better in the offseason.
Andrew Luck, who appears to be battling another injury in preseason, is a risky bet. The first overall pick in 2012 had his best season ever last year, but he still finished fifth in passing yards and 11th in QB rating.
Aaron Rodgers has won this award twice (2011, 2014). He has seen his production fall off the last two seasons, but the 35-year-old is a fierce competitor and looks to break loose under a new system in Green Bay.
Pick — Aaron Rodgers (+1000). Superstar QB should thrive under a change in leadership.
Here are the odds for a perfect and winless season:
- 0-16 season: Yes +950 No -1900
- 16-0 season: Yes +900 No -1800
NFL Prop Bet Predictions
There are dozens of NFL Prop Bets offered on the upcoming season, including whether there will be a perfect regular season or a winless team.
There have been more winless teams in the modern era than undefeated teams. Four teams have failed to win a game in a season — Tampa Bay (1976), Baltimore (1982), Detroit (2008) and Cleveland (2017).
Only two teams have gone undefeated — Miami (1972) and New England (2007).
The Dolphins will likely be the worst team this season, but they also play in one of the weakest divisions in the league. They should beat either New York or Buffalo at home this season.
The Rams and Saints tied with the best record last season at 13-3, but both teams are anything but perfect.
Pick — No team will go undefeated or winless in the 2019-20 NFL season.
Here the the top three favorites to win the AFC Championship:
- New England Patriots +325
- Kansas City Chiefs +400
- Cleveland Browns +600
AFC Championship Prediction
The Patriots stunned the Chiefs in overtime in the AFC final last season in Kansas City. New England will have a lot of holes to fill this year, but Brady always seems to find a way.
The Patriots have won 10 or more games in every season since 2002. They have also been in the Super Bowl in four of the last five seasons.
The Chiefs, who were tied with the best record in the conference last season at 12-4, led the league in scoring with 565 points.
But the problem was a porous defense, which ranked 24th overall. The AFC West champs, with Steve Spagnuolo as the new defensive coordinator, has too much talent to rank near the bottom of the league again.
The Browns are being talked about as a serious contender not only in the AFC, but for the Super Bowl.
They have never won either title. Second-year quarterback Baker Mayfield and star wideout Odell Beckham look to change the “Factory of Sadness” into a division champ for the first time in 29 years.
Pick — Kansas City Chiefs (+400). Any improvement in defense lifts the Chiefs over the top.
Here the the top three favorites to win the NFC Championship:
- Los Angeles Rams +400
- New Orleans Saints +400
- Chicago Bears +700
NFC Championship Prediction
The Rams, who lost in the Super Bowl after one of their best seasons ever, are the deserving favorites with the trio of Jared Goff, Todd Gurley and Aaron Donald. Some would say the Rams were lucky to reach the league final. And, once they did, they proved they weren’t ready for prime time.
The Saints, led by superstar QB Drew Brees, look to rebound after one of the worst missed calls in the history of the game. The missed pass interference call cost New Orleans the NFC title and a shot at New England in the Super Bowl.
The Saints will do a lot of damage this season with a balanced attack of 40-year-old Brees, running back Alvin Kamara and receiver Michael Thomas.
The Bears haven’t won a Super Bowl in 33 years. Does anyone remember 1986 when Jim McMahon, Walter Payton and Richard Dent went 15-1 and destroyed the Patriots in Super Bowl 20? Coming off a first-place finish in the NFC North last season, Chicago has a young, improving offense and one of the best defenses in the league.
Pick — Green Bay Packers (+950). Surprising pick? Yes. But their defense in much improved and Aaron Rodgers is arguably the best QB in the game today.
Super Bowl 54 Prediction
Every year, pundits say that Father Time has finally caught up to Brady and the dynasty for the Patriots is over. While New England will still win the AFC East and make a run in the playoffs, the Chiefs have too much firepower to be gunned down again.
The Packers will shock the league under first-year head coach Matt LaFleur and win the NFC North. Like Brady, Rodgers makes everyone around him a better player. Green Bay finished 10-6 in 2010 and won its fourth Super Bowl.
The Saints, who also nabbed a league trophy in 2009, will lose another NFC final, but not because of the officials this time.
Pick — Kansas City Chiefs (+800). The only question mark with the Chiefs is the defense. Any improvement over last year will make KC a force to be reckoned with. Mahomes and Co. are unstoppable and the top selection in Super Bowl Picks 2020.
