2018 MLB Opening Day: Bettors Offered Heavy Lineup Of Prop Bets

The lineups in Las Vegas sports book are a little longer this week as bettors make last-minute decisions on their Major League Baseball prop bets and futures.

From the Westgate and Wynn on the north end of the Strip and Mandalay Bay and MGM Grand to the south, these venues all have the defending champion Houston Astros as the top pick to repeat in 2018.

Bovada has the 2017 winners listed at +425, with the Los Angeles Dodgers next at +500 and the New York Yankees third at +650.

The baseball season starts on a historic note with the opening pitch between the Chicago Cubs and Miami Marlins at 12:30 p.m. ET on March 29. It will be just the 12th time in 142 years — and the first since 2011 — that the regular season will begin on a Thursday.

All 30 teams will be in action, concluding with the Opening Day nightcap between the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks. The regular season has been extended to 187 days in order to add four additional off-days for all teams.

The three divisional winners and two wild card teams from both the National and American League will hit the postseason, starting on Oct. 3 with the AL wild card game.

The league also gets a three-day break in mid-July for the all-star game, which will be played on July 17 at National Park in Washington, D.C.

Future bets offered on Bovada include World Series odds and the chances of each team in the divisional races.

Prop bets — and there are a lot of them — feature bets for hitters, pitchers and closers.

How many long balls will home run king Giancarlo Stanton of the New York Yankees hit this year? He had 59 for the Marlins last year. The betting line is set at 43.5.

How many victories will three-time Cy Young award winner Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers earn this season? He had 18 last year. The betting line is set at 16.5.

There are also betting lines for most of the hitters on all the teams for batting average, stolen bases, runs batted in and runs scored. For pitchers, it’s your call on ERA, strikeouts and WHIP, while you can also predict the number of total saves for relievers.

Let’s take a look at a couple of examples and try to pick the winners (MLB Season Props provided by Bovada).

0329hamilton

Billy Hamilton — The Cincinnati Reds’ speedster has been the full-time outfielder with the club for four seasons. He stole a career high 59 bases last season, but he also struck out 133 times. While Hamilton has stolen 56 or more bases in all four seasons, he has never had more than the betting line. He’s also a career .248 hitter and does not walk a lot for a leadoff man.

VGB’s pick — Under (-115)

0329kluber

Corey Kluber — The Indians’ ace has been the star of the pitching staff for five seasons. The two-time Cy Young award winner has compiled three 18-win seasons and looks to lead Cleveland to the playoffs again this season in a weak American League Central Division. The 31-year-old’s career ERA (3.13) and WHIP (1.09) numbers are fantastic.

VGB’s pick — Over (-115)

Bet In Las Vegas Or Online

Throughout the seven-month season, sports books will offer odds on the money line and the over/under total on runs scored on each game.

The futures odds will change on each team, depending on injuries, suspensions and performance. The St. Louis Cardinals may be 20-1 to win the World Series today, but a fast start or prolonged winning streak would see their odds drop in a hurry.

You can play ball now and throughout the season. If a trip to Vegas is not in your future, there are many online options available — such as Bovada, TopBet and Betonline.
